This year has been unique for sure. As a South Florida photographer, I would have never expected a virus to drastically effect the entire event industry. Almost every wedding we had booked either canceled or set a new event date. Some clients picked new event dates only to learn months later that they would have to either cancel or change their date again. This picture was taken at a South Florida Bat Mitzvah service that actually did take place on the date chosen by the family. Even though they had to change the location, they kept the same date. This picture was taken during the bat mitzvah service in the family's backyard.
As a Bat / Bar Mitzvah photographer in South Florida, I have photographed lots of ceremonies and parties in all types of locations. Most of the Mitzvahs I have photographed have taken place in temples. However, I have also shot both Bat and Bar Mitzvahs in country clubs, hotels as well. This was the first backyard Bat Mitzvah I have photographed. As you can see the view from the backyard is beautiful. It's a nice location for a South Florida home.
Originally this South Florida Bat Mitzvah was supposed to have over 50 people. As a result of the Coronavirus this Bat Mitzvah had to be scaled back to only 8 people. A video camera was set up during the service, so that all the guests who couldn't attend go to see the bat mitzvah ceremony online. One positive aspect regarding a virtual bat mitzvah service was the fact that our bat mitzvah didn't have to perform in front of a live audience. This made her feel a little less anxious.
During this backyard service everyone wore covid masks except to the Bat Mitzvah. I'm sure reading your Torah portion while wearing a mask would not be much fun.
