What makes this image stand out isn’t just the setting—it’s the relationship. The way Sara’s sister wraps her arms around her, the genuine smiles, and that warm backlight all come together to create something that feels real, not posed. This is the kind of moment parents care about years from now—the connection, the personality, and the feeling of who their daughters were at this exact time. By placing them with the sun behind them, I was able to create that soft, glowing rim light that separates them from the background and gives the image a natural, almost cinematic look.
This is why I always build time into the schedule before the party begins. Rushing through photos doesn’t allow for moments like this to happen. When you slow things down—even just a little—you give kids the chance to relax, interact naturally, and forget about the camera. That’s when the best expressions come out. Whether it’s siblings, parents, or grandparents, these are the images that end up meaning the most—and they’re the ones you simply can’t recreate once the day is over.
I shot this Bat Mitzvah Portrait before the party started at Broken Sound Country Club. We started the photography an hour before the guests arrived. After a few nice casual photos of Sara, (our Bat Mitzvah Girl) around the club. Then we took the country club golf cart to the front entrance of Broken Sound Country Club. I positioned Sara and her sister with the sun behind them which created the beautiful backlighting in this portrait.
Bat / Bar Mitzvahs are one of my favorite events to photograph. There is always so much to shoot I never get bored. Over my years as a photographer I have shot many different types of photography and covered a wide range of different assignments. As a result of working on so many different assignments I've become skilled at covering Bat / Bar Mitzvahs. During the course of photographing at Mitzvah I find that I'm often a portrait photographer, photographing not only the Bat Mitzvah girl but also her family and relatives as well. Then before the party starts, I'm usually found photographing the ballroom decor. In the ballroom there is almost always beautiful decor and/or flowers. In addition the room is often lit with come kind of colored up-lighting. Luckily for me Im skilled in balancing me camera lighting with the back lighting which results in beautiful color correct decor without loosing the up-lighting effect. Then once to party starts I shift gears and become an action photographer, This is a completely different type of photography compared to portraits and decor photos. It's the fact that Bat / Bar Mitzvahs require so many different types of photographic skills that I enjoy photographing them.
