Headshots at a West Palm Beach Convention<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The above collage you see at the top of this section is one of my favorite parts of this project. It\u2019s made up of some of the professional headshots I recently captured during a two-day event at the West Palm Beach Convention Center. This was a big one \u2014 a convention for professionals in the skincare, massage, and makeup industry \u2014 and there were close to 1,000 attendees.<\/p>\n

The company hosting the event found me online. They were looking for a reliable Florida photographer who could handle a high-volume assignment and still deliver professional results on time. After checking out my reviews and looking through my website, they reached out to see if I could take on the project. Once we spoke, it was clear we\u2019d be a great fit.<\/p>\n

Getting Ready for the Event<\/h4>\n

As a South Florida headshot photographer, I cover a lot of ground \u2014 from Miami and Fort Lauderdale all the way up to Palm Beach. I shoot everything from corporate headshots and trade shows to sales meetings and awards events. Every assignment is a little different, but this one was definitely unique because of the sheer number of people.<\/p>\n

The plan was to create professional headshots for all attendees who wanted one. To keep things simple, I set up an online gallery where everyone could find and download their photos. I even added an optional retouching service for anyone who wanted a little extra polish.<\/p>\n

We scheduled the sessions for Saturday and Sunday, just before the main conference opened. When I arrived on Saturday morning, the line for headshots had already started forming \u2014 and it didn\u2019t stop until late in the day!<\/p>\n

Finding the Perfect Angles<\/span><\/h2>\n

With so many people waiting, I needed to work quickly, but I never want anyone to feel rushed. Every person who steps in front of my camera gets a few moments of attention \u2014 a little direction, a quick adjustment to posture or chin angle, and then we shoot.<\/p>\n

Over the years, I\u2019ve learned what angles work best for different people. For example, many women look great when the camera is positioned just a little above eye level \u2014 it\u2019s a subtle thing, but it creates a flattering look and brings the eyes to life. I also like to vary poses slightly: a small head tilt, a shoulder turn, or a different expression can make all the difference.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s amazing how much personality comes through in a single headshot when you take those few extra seconds to connect with the person you\u2019re photographing.<\/p>\n

Lighting and Technical Setup<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For lighting, I kept things simple and reliable. I used a large umbrella and studio strobe, which gave me a nice, even light that worked well on every skin tone. Since I knew I\u2019d be photographing hundreds of people, I wanted a setup that was consistent and quick to adjust if needed.<\/p>\n

A lot of people wore glasses, so I had to be mindful of reflections. The trick is to first see if the lenses have an anti-reflective coating \u2014 if they do, you\u2019re in luck. If not, you need to raise the light just high enough so the reflection from the flash sits above the rim of the glasses. That way, their eyes stay bright and clear without any glare.<\/p>\n

In the few cases where reflections couldn\u2019t be avoided completely, I removed them later using Photoshop AI tools. It\u2019s quick, clean, and the results look completely natural.<\/p>\n

Editing and Retouching<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Once all the images were uploaded to the gallery, I gave attendees the option to order retouching if they wanted. I approach retouching with the same mindset as shooting: less is more.<\/p>\n

For light touch-ups, I\u2019ll use Photoshop\u2019s Clone Stamp and a few skin-softening actions to smooth things out. For more detailed work, I use a technique called frequency separation, which separates the color and tone from the texture \u2014 this lets me fix uneven skin or small blemishes while keeping pores and natural detail intact.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I\u2019ll also use a program from Alien Skin Software that softens skin while adding just enough texture back in so it doesn\u2019t look over-edited. The goal is always the same \u2014 make people look their best, but still like themselves.<\/p>\n

Wrapping Up the Weekend<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By the end of the second day, I had taken close to 1,000 headshots. It was a lot of work \u2014 but also a lot of fun. Every person brought their own personality to the session, and it was great to meet so many professionals who truly cared about presenting themselves in the best light.<\/p>\n

After the event, I created a collage of all the headshots to showcase the range of people I photographed. It\u2019s a great visual summary of the weekend \u2014 hundreds of different faces, all with their own stories and styles, captured in one frame.<\/p>\n

The feedback from both the organizers and the attendees was fantastic. They loved how organized everything was, how good the photos looked, and how easy it was to access them online. Hearing that kind of feedback always makes the long hours worth it.<\/p>\n

Events like this remind me why I love being a Florida-based headshot photographer. South Florida is full of energy and diversity \u2014 every event has its own personality, and every person I photograph brings something different to the table.<\/p>\n

ABOVE: This headshot was taken at the Harbor Beach Marriott. \u00a0When the catering director Delette needed a headshot quickly I was more than happy to get the job done for her. \u00a0In addition to headshots I also photograph weddings. \u00a0I was actually at the hotel getting ready for a wedding. \u00a0Delette is someone who I work with often so I had the task of getting her picture done fast. The hotel has this mural in the lobby so I figured it would be a good place for her headshot. \u00a0Working on the fly I don’t get too many options when it comes to photography locations and inside a busy hotel I had even loss options. \u00a0This South Florida headshot was taken in the horizontal format because I had a camera and a on camera flash. \u00a0I wanted her to have soft even lighting on her face, so bounce flash was required. \u00a0The rule regarding soft lighting for a headshot is; \u00a0The larger the light source the softer the lighting. \u00a0For example, if you shoot with a small flash pointed directly at a person, then that light source is very small. \u00a0Only the size of the flash head. \u00a0However, if you bounce the flash off of a large wall then the light source becomes the wall which is lit by the flash, \u00a0Some of the light will become reflected back off the wall eliminating the person’s face. \u00a0She is actually sitting on a bar stool and posing on a highly reflective bar table. \u00a0The bar table made a good posing table which kept Delette comfortable with her posing. \u00a0By having her use the bat table as a posing table she was able to use her hands in the headshot. We shot several different poseds in a matter of about 5 minutes. \u00a0In several poses her put her elbow on the table and her hand, or hands on her face. \u00a0I was able to crank out about five or six different poses and got a variety of expressions. \u00a0 You can see another headshot by visiting my article on Boynton Beach portrait photography<\/a>, just click the link and go the the bottom of the page. \u00a0I live in a area that is very nice for portrait photography, I get lots of calls for headshots and shooting in my Boynton Beach neighborhood makes it easy for me to take quick headshots. \u00a0Ill add more headshots from around Boynton Beach and on this article over time. A few tips for anyone having a headshot taken. \u00a0 <\/strong>Whenever I have an headshot session set I usually get asked for some tips, so here they are. \u00a0Tip-1<\/strong>. Try to stay away from busy patterns. \u00a0You don’t want people who view your headshot so look at the pattern and not focus on your face. \u00a0Tip-2<\/strong> Don’t get a haircut the day of your headshot. \u00a0If you get your hair cut the day of your headshot then your hair won’t look natural in the picture. If you are going to the a haircut then you should do it several days before the photo-shoot. \u00a0This will give the sharp cuts a change to even out. \u00a0Believe it or not there is a difference in how your hair looks when you compare a picture taken the same day of the haircut vs waiting several days. \u00a0Tip-3<\/strong> make sure you get a very good nights sleep. When well rested you eyes will naturally open wider and look better. If someone looks tired everyone can tell you look tired and the camera will record that and enhance the tired look. \u00a0Sure your tired eyes can be retouched but you really don’t want your photographer retouching tired eyes. \u00a0Tip-4<\/strong> If you wear glasses, have then coated with an anti-reflective coating. \u00a0Getting your eyeglasses treated in not expensive and, trust me on this, it make a huge difference. \u00a0Read this article on helpful wedding tips<\/a> for more on glasses. \u00a0Tip-5<\/strong> \u00a0Go easy with the make-up. As a South Florida headshot photographer I come across may girls who are used to being glammed up often. \u00a0How you wear your make-up should be different when going out into the world vs being photographed. \u00a0Usually a photograph will increase contrast and \u00a0enhance colors. \u00a0Often when retouching people I find myself removing make-up and reducing contrast. \u00a0It’s much easier for your photographer to add contrast and color than it is to take it away. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

BELOW: \u00a0This outdoor headshot was taken during a model portfolio shoot at a South Florida beach. \u00a0Headshot photography in South Florida is very popular for many different reasons. \u00a0First, anyone in business needs a headshot. \u00a0I know that I use my headshot for speaking engagement announcements, \u00a0On my website, for some published articles, whenever a potential client wants to see what I look like, I would shoot over a headshot. \u00a0This headshot was taken for a modeling portfolio, however, I’m sure it will be used for other content. \u00a0Headshot can be taken anyplace, \u00a0outdoors, in an office, at a corporate park, and in this case out in nature. \u00a0I have certain photographic rules for headshot photography. \u00a0One of my key focus points is the eyes. \u00a0Whenever I shoot an image I look at the eyes for what is known as a catch light<\/a>. \u00a0Having a catch light in the person’s eyes results in enhanced eye color, and a point of interest. \u00a0When looking at a headshot, the viewer many not realize this to the attention is drawn to the brightest part of the image. That means the catch light is going to get the attention. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m not just a South Florida headshot photographer, I’m also a photographer who photographs weddings, corporate events and even Bat \/ Bar Mitzvahs. \u00a0Working in the event industry, I find that it’s very important to have several professional headshots at your finger tips. \u00a0Having a collection of different types of headshot is handy for an event photographer because there are lots of different types of events that take place in South Florida. \u00a0In my business, I have found myself covering corporate jobs, weddings, and some fun party type events as well. \u00a0In the case of a website, a different type of headshot could be used for each different category. \u00a0For example, the website section for parties should feature a headshot that conveys a fun, relaxed happy expression. \u00a0In the case of a corporate website page, a different headshot should convey a friendly professional attitude. \u00a0For a wedding page, the headshot could have a more natural look. \u00a0In addition to expression and choices of cloths. \u00a0A headshot could be taken in the environment that fits the industry. \u00a0A corporate executive, \u00a0could have a more impactful headshot if the picture is taken in a corporate environment. \u00a0If you are selling wedding related services then having your headshot taken at a wedding only makes sense.<\/p>\n

What are some of the best ways to use your headshot?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For me as a business owner, I always find new ways to use my headshot. \u00a0Yesterday, I submitted an article talking about a business book I recently read. \u00a0The writer asked everyone responding to include their professional headshot. \u00a0I keep several headshot in folders on each of my work computers. \u00a0This way when I need a spur of the moment headshot, I have one at my fingertips. \u00a0 \u00a0I have found that may people use their headshots on their social media posts<\/strong>, or on their profile. \u00a0If you have an account on\u00a0Linkedin<\/a> then having a headshot\u00a0on your profile page is a must. \u00a0In the case of my headshot, I’m holding a camera. \u00a0This one makes sense since I’m a photographer. \u00a0Click the previous link to see my home page. \u00a0 If course, you can also use your headshot on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and any other social media platform. \u00a0 You can also use your headshot as part of your e-mail signature<\/strong> or on your e-mail account profile. \u00a0<\/strong>Have you ever noticed the lines of business related information at the bottom of some e-mails. \u00a0Including a photo in your e-mail is a great way add a personal touch to a business correspondence. \u00a0 Today we are living in a world in which Covid is making it’s mark on many different industries. \u00a0As a result of covid, platforms such as Zoom, Skype and What’s App have become popular. \u00a0Adding your headshot to your virtual meeting platform is a great idea. \u00a0Doing this is a great way to build your brand identity. \u00a0 If you have a website with a blog, or if you are a blog author, then including your headshot along with your blog posts or articles is another way readers could put a face with the name and article. \u00a0I recently received a call from a Real estate agent who sells and leases mobile homes. \u00a0They needed headshot for everyone in the company. \u00a0Their headshots were taken for use on each person’s business cards. \u00a0How about having your headshot appear in your potential clients mail box? \u00a0I know that my mailbox has seen a crowd of different faces showing up inside my mail box. \u00a0These faces arrive in the form of postcards, newsletters and other direct mail pieces. \u00a0Some headshots have even appeared as part of a coupon.<\/p>\n

I was recently asked to provide helpful information for models, actresses and actors on getting the best headshots. \u00a0Below is some information you may find helpful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For a model, actor or actress, a headshot is one of the most important factors that determine getting the part, or being passed over. \u00a0\u00a0When casting for a television show, movie, and photo shoot or for live production your headshot is what usually gets looked at first.\u00a0 Sure there are cases in which the talent scout or a director personally knows the model, actor and actress, however if you follow the relationship back through history, chances are the first contact started with a headshot. \u00a0\u00a0As a South Florida headshot photographer, I have hired many models for different assignments, some of the models I knew from past jobs, other times look through headshots.<\/span><\/p>\n

Always hire a pro, when looking through headshots; it takes me two seconds to tell if the headshot was taken by a pro or by an amateur.\u00a0\u00a0 Using a poor quality headshot sends the message that the model, actress or actor isn\u2019t serious about being successful.\u00a0\u00a0 A headshot photographer is required to own all the specialized camera gear needed to produce attractive professional headshots.\u00a0 This type of equipment isn\u2019t cheap.\u00a0\u00a0 Rather than just saying the equipment is expensive, I\u2019m going to include some numbers.\u00a0 First, headshots should be taken with a camera that has a full frame sensor.\u00a0 The current least expensive full frame camera is the Canon EOS RP Mirrorless Digital Camera cost is $899.00.\u00a0 Your photographer should also own a professional F2.8 lens.\u00a0 For the Canon brand, the Canon RF 70-200mm f\/2.8L IS USM Lens is the best choice. $2599.00 you may be asking, why such an expensive lens?\u00a0 More on this later.\u00a0 Your photographer will also need lighting, this could be in the form of a studio strobe or an on camera flash, these vary in price from under $100.00 up to $1000.00 Of course, I would not recommend a $100.00 flash.\u00a0 So when you add everything up a professional headshot photographer should own camera gear valued at a minimum of $3500.00 Most true professional headshot photographers have must more invested then $3500.00\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does a headshot photographer need such an expensive lens?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

One measure of a camera lens is the F-Stop A smaller the F-Stop means more light passes through the lens.\u00a0 In addition a smaller F-stop means that the focus point is shallow.\u00a0 This means that everything past the focus point is out of focus.\u00a0 This is referred to as bokeh. A more expensive lens produces a more pleasing bokeh effect.\u00a0In addition a telephoto lens also produces compression.\u00a0 Compression in a portrait means that all the facial features are compressed.\u00a0 The result is, the eye sockets do not appear as deep, the nose appears smaller, and the chin is more compressed.\u00a0 All this makes for a more pleasing portrait.\u00a0 When you career is on the line, wouldn\u2019t you want every extra benefit possible?<\/span><\/p>\n

I usually shoot my headshots with the 70-200mm F2.8 lens. The long focal length of this lens provides a less distracting out of focus background, while keeping the face looking great.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Next there is the question of lighting?\u00a0 Does you headshot photographer understand lighting?\u00a0 Are the photographers portfolio pictures lucky shots?\u00a0 When hiring a headshot photographer, it\u2019s important to hire a photographer who understands lighting, posing, and directing to get the best results.\u00a0 I can\u2019t even begin to tell you how many people have hired me, after shooting with another photographer who offered no direction.\u00a0 \u00a0For the photographer, the ability to pose is critical, for the model the ability to provide facial expression will make or break a headshot.\u00a0 If the photographer can\u2019t pose, the actor, actress or model will sense that and the facial expressions will convey insecurity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The photographer must understand facial lighting.<\/strong>\u00a0 Harsh shadows may work well for a guy, but not for a girl.\u00a0 \u00a0I always as, a shadow on a guy is character, for a girl, a harsh shadow is a wrinkle. Of course there is much more to the art of photographic lighting than highlights and shadows.\u00a0 The photographer provides the lens selection, the lighting and some of the direction.\u00a0 It\u2019s up to the actor, actress or model to provide the expression and some of the posture. Working as a\u00a0South Florida headshot photographer I find myself shooting in many different types of lighting conditions. \u00a0Because the weather here changes often, I always need to be ready for changing clouds which can shift me lighting at anytime. <\/span>Headshots should be vertical.\u00a0 In almost every case a headshot should be in the vertical format.\u00a0 I get the concept that rules could be broken,\u00a0 however if you are an actor, actress or model, and you really want to job, submit a vertical headshot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Colors should be accurate.<\/strong>\u00a0 A headshot should include accurate eye color, hair color, and skim tone.\u00a0 Using image enhancement filters may make a picture more interesting, but the image enhancements should stop where the head begins.\u00a0 Keep enhancements limited to the background only.\u00a0 None wants to blow an addition because the headshot picture doesn\u2019t accurately convey the look of the talent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crop correctly, I headshot should be cropped a chest and should include the head. In addition when the headshot it taken the camera should be shooting from an angle just above the eyes.\u00a0 Imagine a straight line that leads from the camera lens to the subject\u2019s face.\u00a0 That line should hit the person\u2019s eyes from a slight higher angle.<\/span><\/p>\n

By photographing someone from the correct height and distance, your headshot photographer will produce the most attractive picture.<\/p>\n

Shooting from the correct angle is critical if your are going to produce the most flattering headshot. Shooting from an angle that is too low will show too much of the nostril, no one wants an up the nose picture. This slightly higher angle forces to person to look up at the lens. This angle of the face makes a huge difference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
