Bar and Bat Mitzvah Photography: From the Pre-Shoot to the Party<\/h1>\n

Bar and Bat Mitzvah photography<\/strong> is about much more than taking pictures at the party. From a creative pre-shoot and meaningful synagogue portraits to family photographs, party details, dancing and candid moments, each part of the celebration provides an opportunity to tell a different piece of the story.<\/p>\n

A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and every celebration is different. The photography should reflect the personality of the young person as well as the family, traditions and all of the work that went into creating the event.<\/p>\n

In this guide, I’ll take you through the photography process from the pre-shoot to the party and share ideas for creating photographs that are personal, creative and fun.<\/p>\n

Starting With a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Pre-Shoot<\/h2>\n

A pre-shoot is a photography session that takes place before the actual Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration. Unlike event-day photography, a pre-shoot gives us time to concentrate entirely on creating portraits without worrying about the schedule of the service or party.<\/p>\n

The session can take place at a park, an urban location, a studio, the beach, a sports facility or another location that has meaning to the family. The goal isn’t simply to find a pretty background. It’s to choose a setting that helps us create photographs that reflect the personality and interests of the young person.<\/p>\n

Pre-shoots also give us time to experiment. We can change locations, outfits, poses and lighting and create photographs that might not be possible during the busy Mitzvah day.<\/p>\n

Creating a Variety of Looks During the Pre-Shoot<\/h2>\n

One of the advantages of scheduling a separate photo session is the variety of photographs we can create.<\/p>\n

By changing the background, composition and pose, we can go from a traditional portrait to something colorful, contemporary or completely unexpected\u2014all during the same session.<\/p>\n

Samantha’s pre-shoot is a great example. Even without changing her outfit, we were able to create three very different portraits simply by changing the location, background, composition and pose.<\/p>\n

This kind of variety gives families plenty of choices for albums, displays and other elements of the celebration while also creating a collection of portraits that doesn’t look repetitive.<\/p>\n

Creative Photography Techniques for a Mitzvah Pre-Shoot<\/h3>\n

As a photographer, I also consider myself an artist. While capturing the personality of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebrant is always the priority, a pre-shoot gives me the time and freedom to experiment with creative photographic techniques.<\/p>\n

This portrait was photographed using infrared photography<\/strong>, which transforms the foliage, sky and surrounding landscape into something completely different from what we normally see. Techniques like this allow me to create a few unexpected, artistic images alongside the more traditional portraits from the session.<\/p>\n

Incorporating Sports and Hobbies Into a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Pre-Shoot<\/h2>\n

One of my favorite ways to personalize a pre-shoot is to incorporate something the young person genuinely enjoys.<\/p>\n

Sports, music, dance and other hobbies can provide great inspiration for photographs and help make the session feel less like a traditional portrait sitting.<\/p>\n

For this basketball pre-shoot, I took the idea one step further and used a drone to photograph directly above the basket.<\/p>\n

The unusual camera angle turned his love of basketball into a fun and creative portrait that would have been impossible to make with a camera from ground level.<\/p>\n

The best props are often things that already mean something to the child. A basketball, musical instrument or other favorite item can tell us far more about their personality than a prop chosen simply because it looks good in a photograph.<\/p>\n

Taking Bar and Bat Mitzvah Portraits at the Synagogue<\/h2>\n

Not every portrait session needs to happen days or weeks before the celebration. Sometimes an excellent opportunity for portraits is right before the service begins.<\/p>\n

These portraits of Leyah were photographed at Temple Emanu-El in Miami about an hour before her Bat Mitzvah service.<\/p>\n

Photographing before guests arrive gives us time to create beautiful portraits in the synagogue while incorporating meaningful elements such as the Torah and the architecture of the sanctuary.<\/p>\n

I like creating both close-up portraits and wider photographs that show the environment. Years from now, those wider images can help bring back memories not only of how everyone looked, but also of the place where such an important milestone occurred.<\/p>\n

When Photography Isn’t Permitted During the Service<\/h2>\n

Every synagogue has its own photography policies. At some synagogues and Chabad locations, photography during the actual service may be restricted or not permitted.<\/p>\n

That doesn’t mean the family has to go without meaningful photographs involving the Torah.<\/p>\n

When photography isn’t allowed during the service, we can often create these important photographs beforehand.<\/p>\n

This gives us an opportunity to photograph moments that represent an important part of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah while still respecting the rules and traditions of the synagogue.<\/p>\n

Families should always check with their synagogue in advance so everyone knows what photography will and will not be permitted during the service.<\/p>\n

Making Time for Family Portraits<\/h2>\n

The time before the service can also be one of the best opportunities to create family portraits.<\/p>\n

I chose to present this portrait in black and white because removing the color changes the way you see the photograph. The textures of the Torah, the tallit, the synagogue and the expressions become more prominent. Black-and-white photography has a timeless quality, and sometimes it can bring attention to details that might be overlooked in a color photograph.<\/p>\n

After years of photographing Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, I still enjoy finding different ways to photograph these traditional moments. My goal is to create the photographs families expect while also giving them a few images that are more artistic and unexpected.<\/p>\n

Creating Variety Even When Time Is Limited<\/h3>\n

When I photograph a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, I don’t want every portrait to look posed or predictable. Even when all of the photography needs to be completed before the service, there are still opportunities to create a variety of images.<\/p>\n

For these portraits at Chabad in Boca Raton, I photographed the Bar Mitzvah boy in two completely different ways. In one, I asked him to interact with his tallit, which created movement and a more spontaneous expression. For the second, I used the architecture and decorative elements of the synagogue to create a more traditional portrait.<\/p>\n

Sometimes creativity isn’t about finding another location or bringing elaborate props. It’s simply about looking at the surroundings, changing the composition and giving the person something natural to do.<\/p>\n

Once guests arrive and the day’s schedule gets underway, gathering everyone together can become much more difficult. Photographing the immediate family\u2014and sometimes grandparents and extended family\u2014before the service gives us the opportunity to create these portraits while everyone is together and looking their best.<\/p>\n

These photographs often become especially meaningful over time because they document several generations of a family gathered together for an important milestone.<\/p>\n

Capturing Meaningful Moments During the Service<\/h3>\n

Some of my favorite Mitzvah photographs are the quiet moments that happen naturally during the service. During the Shema, it is customary to cover the eyes while reciting the first verse, helping the person concentrate on the prayer without visual distractions.<\/p>\n

As a photographer, moments like this are especially meaningful because nothing is posed or directed. My job is simply to recognize the emotion, stay unobtrusive and capture it as it happens.<\/p>\n

When photography isn’t permitted during the actual service, photographing beforehand gives me more than an opportunity to recreate important moments\u2014it also gives me time to approach those photographs creatively.<\/p>\n

Using the Party D\u00e9cor for Creative Mitzvah Portraits<\/h2>\n

After the service, the photography changes again.<\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting locations for Bar and Bat Mitzvah portraits can actually be found inside the party itself. Families and event professionals put tremendous effort into creating the d\u00e9cor, lighting and atmosphere of these celebrations, so I like to use those elements as part of the photography.<\/p>\n

Leyah’s nightclub-themed Bat Mitzvah provided an amazing setting for portraits.<\/p>\n

By photographing her before the room filled with guests, I could use the dramatic lighting and personalized d\u00e9cor to create portraits that were completely different from the photographs we had made earlier at the synagogue.<\/p>\n

It also makes the d\u00e9cor part of the family’s photographic history of the event rather than something that appears only in pictures of an empty room.<\/p>\n

Arriving at the Bar or Bat Mitzvah Party<\/h2>\n

The arrival at the party is often when the mood of the day changes completely.<\/p>\n

Leyah’s Bat Mitzvah party at Queen Miami Beach included a red-carpet arrival that gave us a perfect opportunity for a dramatic entrance photograph.<\/p>\n

Many Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations also have professional security, particularly when the event is held at a nightclub or other busy entertainment venue. Security can help monitor entrances and keep an eye on young guests so the family can concentrate on enjoying the celebration.<\/p>\n

Finding Creative Portraits in Unexpected Places<\/h3>\n

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing Bar and Bat Mitzvahs is finding creative possibilities that may not be immediately obvious. I\u2019m always looking at the venue, lighting and d\u00e9cor and asking myself how I can use those elements to create something different.<\/p>\n

Before Reese\u2019s Bat Mitzvah party at The Miami Beach EDITION, I noticed this unusual installation made from dozens of exposed light bulbs. Instead of simply using it as a background, I positioned Reese so it appeared that she was holding one of the bulbs in her hand. By adding my own lighting and creating the glow around the bulb, an interesting piece of hotel d\u00e9cor became a unique Bat Mitzvah portrait.<\/p>\n

These are the kinds of photographs I love creating\u2014images that go beyond simply documenting what is in front of me and add an artistic element to the story of the celebration.<\/p>\n

Capturing the Fun and Energy of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Party<\/h2>\n

Once the party gets going, the atmosphere changes again. This is where the energy, excitement and personality of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah really come alive.<\/p>\n

This is also when candid photography becomes especially important.<\/p>\n

Rather than constantly stopping the action and asking everyone to pose, I like to photograph friends dancing, laughing and celebrating as those moments actually happen.<\/p>\n

Those spontaneous expressions and interactions are often some of the family’s favorite pictures.<\/p>\n

Games, Activities and Creative Photo Booths<\/h2>\n

Today’s Bar and Bat Mitzvah parties can include an incredible variety of entertainment.<\/p>\n

Games and creative photo booths are often some of the most popular attractions. From basketball games and interactive activities to elaborate themed backdrops, they give kids plenty to do while also creating great opportunities for candid photography.<\/p>\n

Games Galore for Kids and Adults<\/h3>\n

I like photographing the kids while they’re actually participating rather than simply asking them to look at the camera. Their expressions are real because they’re concentrating on having fun instead of having their picture taken.<\/p>\n

There is rarely a shortage of things to do at a Bar or Bat Mitzvah party. Depending on the celebration, guests may find everything from video and arcade games to basketball, foosball, ping-pong and other interactive activities. And the fun isn’t limited to the kids\u2014it’s not unusual to see parents and other adults getting just as competitive.<\/p>\n

All of these activities also create great opportunities for candid photography. Instead of asking people to pose, I can photograph guests while they’re playing, laughing and interacting with each other.<\/p>\n

The 360 Video Spinner<\/h3>\n

The 360 video spinner has also become a popular attraction at Mitzvah celebrations.<\/p>\n

Instead of standing still for a traditional photograph, guests can move, dance and have fun while the camera circles around them to create a slow-motion video from every angle. It’s interactive entertainment that also gives guests another fun memory from the celebration.<\/p>\n

Special Entertainment Can Take a Mitzvah Party to Another Level<\/h3>\n

Some Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations include special entertainment that turns the party into an unforgettable experience. At this celebration, recording artist Trippie Redd made a special appearance, and the reaction from the young guests was incredible.<\/p>\n

Photographing a live performance like this is very different from photographing portraits earlier in the day. The room is packed, everyone is moving, lighting changes constantly, and security needs room to do its job. My goal is to work within that environment and still capture the excitement, energy and reactions that tell the story of the performance.<\/p>\n

Special Guest Entertainment at a Mitzvah Party<\/h3>\n

Some Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations take the entertainment to another level with a surprise appearance or performance by a well-known artist. At this celebration, recording artist Trippie Redd was the special guest, and the reaction from the kids was immediate.<\/p>\n

Photographing a live performance in the middle of a packed Mitzvah party can be challenging. Between an excited crowd, constantly changing lighting and a professional security detail surrounding the performer, I have to anticipate what is happening and work quickly to capture both the entertainer and the reactions of the guests.<\/p>\n

For me, those reactions are just as important as the performance itself. The phones in the air, the expressions on the kids’ faces and the excitement surrounding the stage tell you exactly what that moment felt like.<\/p>\n

Don’t Forget the Food and Party Details<\/h2>\n

One thing you can usually expect at a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is plenty of food!<\/p>\n

From cocktail-hour favorites and beautifully presented buffets to creative desserts, food is an important part of the celebration.<\/p>\n

As a photographer, I try to photograph these details before the guests dig in. Caterers, planners, florists, designers and families put an enormous amount of work into the presentation, and some of these beautiful displays don’t look the same for very long once the party begins.<\/p>\n

The same applies to centerpieces, place settings, custom signs, favors and other details. Photographing them helps tell the complete story of what the celebration looked and felt like.<\/p>\n

Telling the Complete Bar or Bat Mitzvah Story<\/h2>\n

Great Bar and Bat Mitzvah photography<\/strong> shouldn’t feel like a collection of unrelated pictures. It should tell the story of the entire experience.<\/p>\n

That story might begin weeks before the event with a creative pre-shoot. It continues with portraits at the synagogue, photographs with the Torah and family, and then changes completely when everyone arrives at the party.<\/p>\n

From carefully created portraits to the completely unpredictable moments on the dance floor, each photograph has a different role to play.<\/p>\n

Years later, the goal is for the family to be able to look through these images and experience the entire celebration again\u2014from the pre-shoot to the party.<\/p>\n
