I shot this photo while they were setting up for a wedding reception at the Polo Club in Boca Raton, FL. As a South Florida based wedding photographer, I'm always drawn to fine details. I'm always looking for the detailed patterns in items such as wedding gowns, linens, and in this case a wedding cake.
Often the wedding photographer will wait for the reception ballroom decor to be finished before starting to take ballroom decor photos. I use this opportunity to shoot some of the people working to make the bride and grooms wedding beautiful. One word of caution: Always tread carefully when shooting the wedding vendors who are working to set up a wedding.
While it true that many beautifully dressed guests are in attendance at a wedding the same can't be said for many of the people helping to create the bride and grooms dream wedding.
During a wedding ceremony and reception set-up the workers and designers are working with tape, glue, staple guns, scissors, flowers sitting in water to keep them fresh. This is not the time when all the wedding professionals are looking their best. They are all there to work and create a beautiful event. Because of this it's always best to ask the person working if they don't mind having their photo taken. Some will say sure and I would love to have a copy of the photo, others will tell the photographer, I would rather you didn't I don't look my best right now.
In the case with wedding and event planners, I have often seen the wedding planner dress for work before the wedding and then change into something more sophisticated before the guests arrive.
For this photo I used a Nikon D910 and a bounce flash. I was drawn to the detail of the wedding cake and thought it would look awesome in black and white.
