Family Portrait Photographer South Florida | Creating Meaningful Family Memories for Generations

Family enjoying a fun outdoor portrait session in South Florida while playing bocce ball at The Boca Raton resort, photographed by family portrait photographer Jeff Kolodny.
A great family portrait session captures more than smiles. It captures personality, laughter, and genuine moments together. This South Florida family enjoyed a fun game of bocce ball during their portrait session at The Boca Raton.

One of the biggest misconceptions about family portrait photography is that everyone has to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera. While traditional portraits certainly have their place, some of the most memorable family photographs happen when families simply relax, interact, and enjoy spending time together.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families have trusted for years, I always encourage my clients to incorporate activities that reflect their personalities. Whether it’s walking on the beach, exploring a local park, playing games together, or simply laughing and talking, these natural interactions often produce the most meaningful photographs.

This family chose to spend part of their portrait session enjoying a game of bocce ball at The Boca Raton. The result was a collection of images filled with genuine expressions, excitement, and laughter. Instead of forced smiles, we captured authentic moments that tell the story of who they are as a family.

One of the goals of every South Florida family photography session is to create images that families will treasure for years to come. Children grow quickly, parents change, and life moves fast. Professional family portraits preserve these moments and allow future generations to look back on the relationships, personalities, and memories that made this stage of life special.

Whether you are visiting South Florida on vacation or you live in Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach, or anywhere in South Florida, a professional family portrait session is a wonderful way to celebrate the people who matter most.

My approach combines traditional family portraits with candid lifestyle photography to create a gallery that feels natural, authentic, and uniquely yours.

Capturing Families, Relationships, and Moments That Matter

As a Family Portrait Photographer in South Florida, I have spent my career photographing some of life’s most important milestones.

Many people know me as a wedding photographer. Over the years, I have photographed more than 2,000 weddings throughout South Florida and beyond. What many people may not realize is that weddings are also about family.

Every wedding includes family portraits.

Every wedding includes relationships.

Every wedding includes parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and multiple generations coming together to celebrate a special occasion.

The same skills that have helped me photograph thousands of weddings have also allowed me to create meaningful family portraits throughout my career.

In fact, when I stop and think about it, portrait photography has always been one of the most important parts of my business.

Many of my family portrait clients first met me when I photographed their wedding.

Others found me through a bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah celebration.

Some discovered my work through corporate events or referrals from previous clients.

Over time, those clients became families, and those families returned whenever they wanted professional portraits that reflected the people and relationships most important to them.

Looking back, I probably should have spent more time promoting family portrait photography because it has consistently been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

Family portrait sessions allow me to slow down, connect with people, and create photographs that often become treasured family heirlooms.

Mother and daughter posing together during a family portrait session at their South Florida home during the holiday season.
When families gather for the holidays, it’s the perfect time to schedule a professional family portrait session and create memories that will last for generations.

One of the busiest times of the year for a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families trust is the holiday season. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s bring family members together from across the country, creating a rare opportunity to capture professional family portraits while everyone is in town.

Today’s families are often spread across multiple cities and states. Children move away for college, careers, and new opportunities, making it increasingly difficult to coordinate a portrait session with the entire family. The holidays naturally solve that challenge by bringing everyone together under one roof.

This portrait session was photographed at the family’s South Florida home, creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for meaningful photographs. Home portrait sessions often produce some of the most personal images because they capture families in a place that holds special memories and significance.

As a South Florida Family Photographer, I frequently photograph families during the holiday season in Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and throughout South Florida. Whether it’s a small portrait session featuring parents and adult children or a large extended family gathering with multiple generations, these photographs become treasured keepsakes for years to come.

If your family will be together during the holidays, it’s an ideal time to schedule a professional family portrait session and preserve memories that future generations will cherish.

Why Family Portraits Matter

Life moves quickly.

Children grow.

Families change.

Grandparents age.

Milestones come and go.

Many of the photographs we take with our phones are wonderful snapshots of everyday life, but professional family portraits serve a different purpose.

They create a lasting record of a moment in time.

Years from now, a family portrait may become one of the most valuable possessions a family owns.

It becomes more than a photograph.

It becomes part of a family’s history.

I have had clients tell me that portraits I created years ago became especially meaningful after the loss of a parent or grandparent.

Others tell me that family portraits displayed in their homes remind them every day of what matters most.

That is one of the reasons I love family portrait photography.

The photographs continue to grow in value long after the session is complete.

Beautiful Family Portraits at the Opal Grand in Delray Beach

One of the things that separates an average family photograph from an exceptional family portrait is lighting. As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families have trusted for many years, I understand that beautiful lighting is the foundation of every successful portrait session.

This family portrait was photographed at the beautiful Opal Grand Resort in Delray Beach. Located just steps from the ocean, the resort offers stunning portrait locations both inside and outside the property. As the sun begins to set, the light becomes soft, flattering, and ideal for creating elegant family portraits that look natural and timeless.

While beautiful locations certainly help, the real key to creating outstanding portraits is knowing how to work with whatever lighting conditions are presented. South Florida weather can change quickly. Bright sunlight, cloudy skies, mixed lighting, and challenging indoor environments often require experience and technical expertise to produce professional results.

When you view my family portrait portfolio, you’ll notice that the lighting is consistently soft, even, and flattering. You won’t see harsh shadows across faces or blown-out highlights that distract from the people in the photograph. Whether I am photographing a family at the beach, at a luxury resort, in a private home, or at a local park, my goal is always the same: create beautiful images that showcase each family at their very best.

Family portraits become more valuable with every passing year. Children grow up, grandparents age, and families change. Professional family photography preserves these moments and creates heirloom-quality images that can be enjoyed for generations.

If you are looking for a Family Portrait Photographer in South Florida, whether in Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, or Miami, I would love to help create beautiful family portraits your family will treasure forever.

Family portrait session in South Florida featuring parents and two young boys photographed years after their wedding by South Florida family portrait photographer Jeff Kolodny.
One of the greatest compliments I can receive as a Family Portrait Photographer in South Florida is being invited back year after year. I first photographed this couple’s wedding, and years later I had the pleasure of creating these family portraits with their two sons. From marriage proposals and weddings to family portraits and milestone celebrations, I have been privileged to document their family’s story as it unfolds.

One of the greatest rewards of my career as a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families have trusted for decades is the opportunity to watch families grow over time. These photographs are a perfect example of that journey.

I first met this wonderful couple years ago when I photographed their wedding. Like many couples on their wedding day, they were excited about the future and all of the adventures that lay ahead. Fast forward several years, and that future has become a beautiful reality. Today, they are the proud parents of two energetic boys, and I was honored to create these family portraits for them.

Moments like these remind me that photography is not simply about taking pictures. It is about preserving a family’s story. The smiles, the personalities, the way parents hold their children close—these are the details that become priceless with time.

One of the things that makes my photography business unique is that many of my client relationships last for years and sometimes even decades. Often, I begin by photographing a surprise marriage proposal. Soon afterward comes the wedding day itself. Then, a few years later, I receive a phone call asking if I am available for family portraits. Before long, I am photographing birthdays, holiday gatherings, Bat and Bar Mitzvahs, graduation celebrations, and anniversaries.

I consider it a tremendous honor to be invited back for all of these milestones.

The portraits in this session capture both the love of the parents and the personalities of their two sons. The family portrait shows everyone together, relaxed and happy, while the second image focuses on the boys and the special bond they share as brothers. Years from now, these photographs will serve as a reminder of this stage of their lives—a time filled with childhood smiles, laughter, and family connection.

As a photographer serving Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and throughout South Florida, my goal is to create portraits that are both timeless and natural. I want families to feel comfortable during their sessions so their personalities shine through. The best family photographs are not forced. They are genuine moments of love, laughter, and connection.

I have photographed thousands of important moments throughout my career, but sessions like this one hold a special meaning for me. Seeing a couple whose wedding I once photographed standing proudly with their children is a reminder of why I love what I do.

Being there for the beginning of a family’s story is special. Being invited back to photograph the chapters that follow is even more meaningful. That is what being a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida is all about—creating images that preserve memories for generations to come.

A genuine smile, sparkling eyes, and a relaxed pose are often the ingredients for a memorable portrait. This outdoor portrait session captures more than just how a child looks—it captures who he is at this moment in time: confident, happy, and full of personality. At Jeff Kolodny Photography, children’s portraits are designed to be fun and stress-free, allowing kids to relax and be themselves. Whether photographed at a park, beach, resort, or private residence, every session is focused on creating natural images that families will treasure for years to come. Family Portrait Photography Throughout South Florida

One of the advantages of being a Family Portrait Photographer in South Florida is the incredible variety of beautiful locations available for photography.

South Florida offers a unique combination of natural beauty, luxury settings, and year-round outdoor opportunities.

Some families prefer the beach.

Others prefer a tropical garden setting.

Some enjoy elegant resort environments.

Others love parks, waterfront locations, or private residences.

Over the years, I have photographed families throughout:

  • Boca Raton
  • Delray Beach
  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Palm Beach
  • West Palm Beach
  • Miami Beach
  • Coral Gables
  • Aventura
  • Parkland
  • Weston
  • Lighthouse Point
  • Deerfield Beach

Every family is different, and every location contributes to the story we are trying to tell.

My goal is always to help clients select a location that reflects their personality and creates the type of images they envision.

Young brothers holding baseball gloves during a family portrait session in Palm Beach photographed by Family Portrait Photographer Jeff Kolodny, capturing their love of baseball with natural expressions and beautiful outdoor lighting.
Some of my favorite family portraits happen when children bring along something they truly love. During this Palm Beach family portrait session, these brothers brought their baseball gloves, giving us the opportunity to create portraits that showcase not only their smiles but also their personalities and passion for the game. As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families trust, I love creating images that are both fun and timeless.

When parents schedule a family portrait session, they often think first about the traditional photographs—the entire family together, the parents alone, and perhaps a few individual portraits of the children.

And of course, we create all of those images.

But some of my favorite photographs happen when we go one step further and incorporate something that means a lot to the family or to the children themselves.

These portraits are a perfect example.

During this Palm Beach family photo session, I worked closely with the parents to create a wide variety of images. We photographed the entire family together, created romantic portraits of Mom and Dad, photographed the brothers together, and then decided to create something a little different.

The boys brought their baseball gloves.

Immediately, the portrait session became more personal.

Instead of simply standing and smiling, the boys interacted naturally with the camera. Their expressions became genuine, their confidence grew, and their personalities came shining through. The result was a series of portraits that celebrate not only what they look like at this age but also who they are.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, I often encourage families to bring meaningful props to their sessions. Whether it is a baseball glove, a ballet outfit, a surfboard, a musical instrument, or even the family dog, these personal touches help tell a story and create photographs that become more meaningful over time.

One aspect of my photography that I pay close attention to is lighting.

If you look through my family portraits, children’s portraits, and even many of my action photographs, you will notice something very consistent—the lighting on the face is soft, flattering, and natural.

I believe beautiful light is one of the keys to creating timeless portraits.

Children move quickly. They laugh, turn, and change expressions in an instant. My job is to create a relaxed environment while positioning them in light that is flattering and natural, producing photographs that parents will proudly display in their homes for years to come.

Over the years, I have photographed children of all ages throughout Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. Some are shy, some are energetic, and some would rather be playing sports than taking pictures. I understand that, and I work with their personalities rather than against them.

The result is a portrait session that feels fun instead of stressful.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, I believe the best portraits are not stiff or overly posed. They are images that capture joy, confidence, personality, and the special moments that make each family unique.

Years from now, these boys may remember the baseball games they played.

But their parents will always have these photographs to remind them exactly what this stage of life looked like—the smiles, the excitement, and the simple joy of being kids.

And that is what great family photography is all about.

Three-generation family portrait photographed at The Boca Raton featuring grandparents, adult children, and grandchildren gathered together during the holidays in South Florida.Short Description
The holidays are one of the busiest and most meaningful times of the year for me as a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer. With families spread across the country, the holidays are often the rare occasion when grandparents, children, and grandchildren are all together in one place. South Florida—and especially The Boca Raton—has become a favorite gathering spot for families who have traded snow for sunshine and created a new home here. These multi-generational family portraits preserve something truly special: not just smiling faces, but the love, connections, and memories shared across generations. Years from now, photographs like these become some of a family’s most treasured possessions.

What Makes a Great Family Portrait?

The answer may surprise you.

It isn’t expensive clothing.

It isn’t perfect weather.

It isn’t even the location.

The most important element of a successful family portrait is connection.

The strongest photographs happen when people feel comfortable together.

A child laughing with a parent.

A grandparent holding a grandchild.

Siblings sharing a moment.

Parents looking proudly at their children.

These interactions create images that feel genuine and timeless.

As a photographer, my role is to guide the session while allowing natural moments to happen.

The best portraits often occur between poses.

A spontaneous laugh.

A meaningful glance.

A quiet moment that no one expected.

Those are often the images families treasure most.

Baby Skyler sleeps peacefully surrounded by the IVF syringes that represent her parents’ journey to parenthood. Years earlier, I photographed her parents’ wedding. Today, I have the privilege of documenting the next chapter of their story as a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer.

A Full Circle Moment: From Wedding Photography to Baby Skyler’s IVF Story

One of the greatest gifts of being a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer is the opportunity to grow alongside the families I photograph.

Years ago, I photographed Skyler’s parents on their wedding day. Like many couples, they dreamed about building a family together. Years later, I received the wonderful news that they were expecting—and that their journey to parenthood had been made possible through IVF.

During the newborn session, Skyler’s mother shared an idea with me.

She wanted to create a portrait that honored their fertility journey.

The syringes you see surrounding baby Skyler are not simply medical instruments. They represent determination. Patience. Hope. They represent countless appointments, difficult moments, and unwavering faith that one day they would hold this little girl in their arms.

Today, that dream is sleeping peacefully in the center of this photograph.

Photography That Tells Your Family’s Story

As a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer, I believe family photographs should be personal.

Sometimes that means a beautiful portrait at the beach.

Sometimes it means three generations gathered together.

And sometimes, it means creating a photograph that tells the story of everything it took to bring a child into the world.

Every family is different.

Every story is unique.

The best photographs celebrate not just who you are today, but the journey that brought you here.

Tiny fingers. Tiny toes. A lifetime of dreams ahead. This peaceful newborn portrait, photographed in a vintage rocking chair, captures the innocence and beauty that make these first few weeks so precious. As a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer, I love creating timeless newborn portraits that preserve these fleeting moments before babies grow and change so quickly. These are the photographs families treasure for generations.

IVF Baby Photography and Celebrating the Journey

I have photographed many important milestones over my career—engagements, weddings, maternity sessions, newborn portraits, and family gatherings.

But there is something especially meaningful about photographing an IVF baby.

For many parents, IVF is an emotional journey filled with hope, uncertainty, courage, and perseverance. The arrival of a child is not simply another milestone; it is the realization of a dream that may have taken years to achieve.

Images like this preserve that story forever.

Years from now, Skyler may look at this photograph and understand how deeply she was wanted and how fiercely she was loved before she was even born.

Baby Skyler sleeps peacefully in a vintage rocking chair, her tiny toes curled and her sweet expression reminding us just how quickly these precious newborn days pass. As a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer, I love capturing the little details—tiny fingers, soft curls, and peaceful moments—that parents want to remember forever. These timeless newborn portraits become treasured family heirlooms for generations to come.

Why I Love Photographing Growing Families

There is a special joy that comes from photographing a couple’s wedding and then years later photographing their children.

I have been fortunate to experience this many times throughout my career.

I have watched brides become mothers.

Grooms become fathers.

Families of two become families of three, four, and five.

Those long-term relationships are one of the reasons I love being a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer.

Photography is not only about creating beautiful images.

It is about preserving a family’s story.

And for Skyler and her parents, this image tells a story of hope, perseverance, and a love that never gave up.

That is a story worth remembering forever.

Parents pose proudly with their newborn IVF baby surrounded by fertility syringes during a South Florida family portrait session celebrating their journey to parenthood.
After photographing this couple’s wedding years earlier, I was honored to photograph the newest chapter of their lives—their beautiful IVF miracle. This portrait celebrates love, perseverance, and the incredible joy of finally becoming a family.

South Florida Family Portrait Photographer: Celebrating an IVF Miracle

One of the greatest joys of being a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer is watching families grow.

Often, my journey with a couple begins on their wedding day. I photograph their excitement as they exchange vows, celebrate with friends and family, and begin their lives together. Then, years later, I receive one of the happiest phone calls imaginable:

“We’re finally parents.”

That is exactly what happened with this wonderful couple.

Years ago, I had the privilege of being their South Florida Wedding Photographer. I photographed one of the happiest days of their lives, but none of us could have imagined the emotional journey that would follow.

Like many couples, they dreamed of having a child.

That dream eventually became a reality through IVF.

When they contacted me to photograph their newborn daughter, they wanted to create something meaningful—something that would honor the difficult road they traveled and celebrate the miracle they had finally received.

The result is this photograph.

More Than a Family Portrait

I love this image because it tells a complete story.

The parents’ expressions say everything.

There is pride.

There is gratitude.

There is relief.

And there is an overwhelming sense of love.

Their baby lies peacefully in the center of the photograph, surrounded by the syringes that symbolize the months—and perhaps years—of hope, determination, and perseverance that brought her into their lives.

The words above them say:

“Our greatest miracle made possible by IVF.”

For this family, those words are not simply decoration.

They are their truth.

The Privilege of Photographing Growing Families

As a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer, moments like these remind me why I love what I do.

Many of the families featured throughout my website are people whose weddings I photographed years earlier.

I have watched newlyweds become parents.

I have photographed maternity sessions, newborn portraits, birthdays, graduations, and growing families.

I don’t simply photograph one event.

I photograph lives.

That continuity means everything to me.

There is something incredibly special about standing beside a couple on their wedding day and then years later photographing the family they dreamed of creating together.

Portrait of two young cousins leaning on a stone balcony during a family photo session at The Boca Raton in South Florida.
One of the things I love most about being a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer is capturing not only the large family group but also the individual relationships that make every family unique. During this family portrait session at The Boca Raton, I photographed grandparents, parents, grandchildren, and then took time to create this sweet portrait of two cousins enjoying a moment together. These individual portraits often become family favorites because they celebrate the special bonds between siblings, cousins, and generations. When photographing large family gatherings, my goal is always to create a complete story—beautiful group portraits as well as meaningful images of each family and each person who makes the occasion special.

Family Photography Is About Stories

Anyone can take a picture.

But the photographs that matter most are the ones that tell a story.

This image tells the story of courage.

It tells the story of perseverance.

It tells the story of two people who never gave up on their dream of becoming parents.

And now, years from now, their daughter will be able to look at this photograph and understand just how deeply she was loved before she was even born.

That is powerful.

That is what family photography is all about.

South Florida Family Portraits That Matter

As a South Florida Family Portrait Photographer, my goal is to create photographs that are not only beautiful but meaningful.

Whether I am photographing a newborn baby, a growing family, a graduation, or multiple generations gathered together, I want my clients to have photographs that become more valuable with every passing year.

Because life changes.

Children grow.

Memories fade.

But photographs preserve the moments that matter most.

And sometimes, as in this portrait, they preserve an entire journey.

A journey of hope.

A journey of love.

And a miracle that changed everything forever.

Mother kneeling on a grassy lawn holding her smiling baby during an outdoor South Florida family portrait session.
One of the biggest joys—and challenges—of family portrait photography is working with little ones. Babies and toddlers have minds of their own, and that’s exactly what makes their expressions so genuine. Some moments they’re all smiles, and the next they’re looking everywhere except the camera! As a South Florida family photographer, I’ve learned that a little creativity goes a long way. Whether it’s silly noises, funny faces, or my trusty squeaky owl perched on the camera lens, the goal is always the same: capturing authentic reactions and real family memories. This sweet smile is the perfect reminder that patience and playfulness often create the most heartwarming portraits.

Experience Makes a Difference

One of the greatest advantages I bring to family portrait photography is experience.

Photographing more than 2,000 weddings has taught me how to work with people under virtually every condition imaginable.

Weddings move quickly.

Timelines change.

Lighting changes.

Weather changes.

Emotions run high.

Despite those challenges, beautiful portraits still need to be created.

That experience helps tremendously during family portrait sessions.

I understand how to work efficiently.

I know how to create flattering light.

I know how to position groups.

Most importantly, I know how to help people feel comfortable.

Many clients begin a portrait session by saying the same thing.

“We’re not good at being photographed.”

The truth is that very few people feel completely comfortable in front of a camera.

That is normal.

A successful portrait session is not about finding people who know how to pose.

It is about creating an environment where people can relax and be themselves.

Multi-Generational Family Portraits

Some of my favorite sessions involve multiple generations of the same family.

These sessions often bring together grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren.

The logistics can be challenging.

The rewards are tremendous.

Creating portraits that include several generations requires careful planning and organization.

Large group photographs are important.

Smaller family groupings are important.

Individual relationships are important.

Grandparents with grandchildren.

Parents with children.

Siblings together.

Each combination tells a different story.

These sessions often produce some of the most meaningful images because they document relationships that may never be photographed together again.

The value of these photographs often increases with every passing year.

Creative family portrait in South Florida featuring parents and two sons playfully stacked together on the grass beneath palm trees, photographed by Jeff Kolodny Family Portrait Photographer South Florida.
Family portraits don’t have to be stiff or formal. Sometimes the best photographs happen when everyone relaxes, has fun, and simply enjoys being together. During this South Florida family portrait session, I encouraged this family to interact naturally, creating a playful image filled with genuine smiles, love, and connection.

When many people think about family portraits, they imagine everyone standing in a straight line, smiling at the camera, hoping the kids cooperate for a few minutes.

But I believe family photography can be so much more than that.

I want families to laugh together.

I want kids to be kids.

I want parents to forget they are being photographed and simply enjoy the moment.

That’s exactly what happened during this family portrait session in South Florida.

Instead of relying solely on traditional poses, I suggested something playful and a little different. We created this fun stacked pose with the boys climbing on top of Mom and Dad, creating a portrait filled with energy, affection, and genuine smiles.

The result is a photograph that immediately draws people in.

You can feel the love.

You can see the personalities.

And most importantly, you get a glimpse of what this family is really like.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, one of my goals is to create portraits that go beyond simply recording what people look like. I want to capture relationships. I want to preserve personalities. Years from now, I want parents to look at these photographs and remember exactly what it felt like when their children were this age.

That is why I spend so much time working with families before and during the session. We discuss locations, clothing, ideas, and the types of photographs they envision. Some families want elegant portraits. Others want playful and relaxed images. Most want a combination of both.

And I love creating that variety.

If you browse through my family portrait work, you’ll notice something else as well. Whether I am photographing toddlers, teenagers, parents, or grandparents, I pay very close attention to lighting. Beautiful, flattering light is one of the foundations of great portrait photography. Soft light creates natural skin tones, flattering faces, and timeless images that never go out of style.

For me, a successful family portrait session is not measured by how many poses we create.

It’s measured by how people feel when they see their photographs.

Do they smile?

Do they remember the laughter?

Do they see the love their family shares?

If the answer is yes, then I have done my job.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, serving Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, I strive to create photographs that are natural, creative, and full of life. Whether your family is large or small, playful or traditional, my goal is always the same—to create beautiful images that tell your story and become treasured memories for years to come.

And sometimes, all it takes is lying in the grass, climbing on Dad’s back, and having a little fun.

Family Portraits at the Beach

South Florida beaches remain one of the most popular locations for family portrait photography.

It is easy to understand why.

Beautiful light.

Open spaces.

Ocean views.

Relaxed atmosphere.

The beach provides a timeless backdrop that works beautifully for families of all sizes.

I often recommend scheduling beach portrait sessions during the hour before sunset.

The light becomes softer and more flattering, creating warm tones and beautiful colors.

Children are often more relaxed at the beach as well, which helps create natural expressions and authentic interactions.

Some of my favorite family portraits have been created while families simply walked together along the shoreline.

Luxury Resort Family Portraits

South Florida is home to some of the finest resorts in the country.

Many families visit the area for vacations, reunions, anniversaries, and special celebrations.

These occasions provide wonderful opportunities for professional family portraits.

Luxury resorts offer elegant architecture, landscaped grounds, waterfront views, and beautiful natural light.

The result is a portrait experience that feels both relaxed and sophisticated.

Many of my resort portrait clients are visiting South Florida and want to preserve memories from their trip while creating professional portraits they can enjoy for years.

Family Reunions and Special Gatherings

Family reunions provide another excellent opportunity for professional portrait photography.

Bringing an entire family together is not easy.

Schedules rarely align.

Travel arrangements can be complicated.

That is why reunions often become the perfect time to create professional portraits.

These sessions allow families to document multiple generations while everyone is gathered in one place.

The photographs become lasting reminders of the time spent together.

Many families tell me afterward that the portraits became one of the highlights of the entire reunion.

Portrait Photography and Weddings

Wedding photography has played a major role in developing my portrait skills.

Every wedding includes portrait photography.

Family portraits.

Bride and groom portraits.

Parent portraits.

Grandparent portraits.

Wedding party portraits.

Years of photographing weddings have taught me how to work efficiently while creating images that look natural and polished.

The ability to organize groups, work quickly, and create genuine expressions carries directly into family portrait sessions.

Many of my family portrait clients originally hired me for their wedding.

Over time, I have had the privilege of photographing their growing families as well.

There is something incredibly rewarding about documenting those chapters of life.

Portrait Photography and Bar & Bat Mitzvahs

Bar and bat mitzvah photography also relies heavily on portrait photography.

Before every celebration, I spend time creating portraits of the guest of honor and their family.

These portraits often become some of the most important images from the entire event.

Parents want portraits that showcase their child.

Grandparents want family photographs.

Siblings want photographs together.

The experience gained through years of photographing mitzvahs has helped me become a stronger family portrait photographer because it requires working with people of all ages.

Children.

Teenagers.

Parents.

Grandparents.

Every age group presents unique challenges and opportunities.

Learning how to connect with each of them has been invaluable.

Creating Portraits That Feel Natural

Family walking together along a South Florida beach with two young boys and a baby photographed by Family Portrait Photographer Jeff Kolodny using professional lighting techniques to create natural beach portraits.
Beautiful family portraits don’t always happen during sunset. This South Florida beach portrait was photographed in the middle of the day using careful positioning and professional lighting techniques to create flattering light and natural expressions. By encouraging the family to walk together toward the camera, I captured a moment filled with movement, connection, and genuine smiles.

Many people assume that beautiful family portraits can only be created at sunset.

I disagree.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, I have photographed families on beaches, at luxury resorts, in private homes, parks, and waterfront locations throughout Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. While the golden hour is wonderful, experience and technique allow me to create beautiful family portraits throughout the day—even under difficult lighting conditions.

This photograph is a perfect example.

The session took place on a bright South Florida beach around midday, one of the most technically challenging times to photograph people outdoors. The sun is high overhead, creating strong shadows under the eyes and chin. Many amateur photographers struggle in these conditions because harsh sunlight can make even the happiest family look tired or uncomfortable.

But lighting is one of the most important aspects of professional portrait photography.

By carefully positioning the family, controlling the angle of the sunlight, and using professional electronic flash to fill the shadows, I was able to create soft, flattering light on every face while maintaining the beautiful natural atmosphere of the beach.

The technical side is important.

But so is creating a moment.

Getting young children—and especially a baby—to look toward the camera at the same time is rarely easy. Instead of forcing everyone into a stiff pose, I often create movement and interaction. In this case, I asked the family to simply hold hands and walk naturally toward me.

The result is a portrait that feels relaxed and authentic.

Mom and Dad are connected.

The children are engaged.

The baby is smiling.

And the image feels alive.

That is one of the things I love most about family photography.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, my goal is not simply to arrange people and press the shutter. My goal is to create photographs that tell the story of a family and preserve the love and connection they share.

Whether your family dreams of beach portraits in Boca Raton, an elegant family session in Palm Beach, relaxed portraits in Fort Lauderdale, or beautiful family photography in Miami, I bring years of experience, technical expertise, and a relaxed approach designed to make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera.

The best family portraits are not always perfectly posed.

Sometimes they happen when families laugh, walk together, and simply enjoy being with one another.

Those are the moments that become treasured memories.

And those are the photographs I love to create.

One of the most common concerns I hear from clients is that they don’t want their portraits to look stiff or overly posed.

I agree completely.

While some direction is necessary, my goal is always to create photographs that feel natural.

I guide clients throughout the session while encouraging interaction and genuine expression.

I pay attention to body language.

I watch for authentic moments.

I create opportunities for families to interact naturally.

The result is a collection of portraits that feel relaxed, personal, and real.

The Value of Professional Family Portraits

The older I get, the more I appreciate the importance of photographs.

Images become increasingly valuable with time.

What feels ordinary today may become priceless tomorrow.

A family portrait is not simply about creating a beautiful image.

It is about preserving relationships.

It is about documenting a chapter in a family’s story.

It is about creating something that future generations will appreciate.

That responsibility is something I never take lightly.

Every family has a story.

Every family has relationships worth preserving.

My goal is to create photographs that reflect those relationships in an honest and meaningful way.

One of the greatest joys of my career is photographing families through every stage of life. I first photographed this couple’s engagement session, then their wedding, and now I have had the privilege of creating multiple family portraits as their family has grown. Soon, I will be photographing them again—this time including the grandparents. As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families trust, I love creating natural images that celebrate love, laughter, and the special bond between every member of the family, including the four-legged ones.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida families have trusted for years is seeing familiar faces return again and again as their lives change and grow.

This wonderful family is a perfect example.

Years ago, I first met this couple when they hired me to photograph their engagement session. Soon afterward, I photographed their wedding day—a day filled with excitement, happiness, and dreams about the future. Since then, I have had the privilege of photographing numerous family portraits as their family has grown, and I am excited to say that another family session is already on the calendar. This time, the grandparents will be joining us as well.

To me, that is what photography is all about.

The photographs I create are not just pictures taken on a particular day. They become part of a family’s history. They preserve memories that grow more valuable with each passing year.

One of the advantages of being a photographer who specializes in weddings, engagements, and family portraits is that I often become my clients’ photographer for life. I have photographed marriage proposals, weddings, maternity sessions, newborn portraits, family portraits, holiday cards, Bat and Bar Mitzvahs, anniversaries, and multi-generational family gatherings throughout South Florida.

There is no greater compliment than when a client calls years later and says, “We’re ready for another family portrait.”

This particular session was especially fun because the family wanted to include one very important family member—their dog. And as any dog lover knows, pets are family too.

Over the years, I have photographed countless dogs during portrait sessions, and I genuinely enjoy working with them. Patience, timing, and understanding animal behavior make all the difference. Some dogs are energetic, some are shy, and some simply want to run around and play. My goal is to make the experience enjoyable while capturing their personality naturally.

As you can see in this portrait, everyone looks relaxed and comfortable. The baby is smiling, the parents are enjoying the moment, and their dog is proudly posing right alongside them. These natural expressions are what make family portraits meaningful.

As a Family Portrait Photographer South Florida, serving Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, my goal is to create photographs that feel genuine and timeless. Whether your family includes toddlers, teenagers, grandparents, or beloved pets, I want to create images that celebrate your unique story.

And if your dog is part of the family? Bring them along. I would love to photograph them too.

The location matters.

Every family has its own story, which is one of the reasons I enjoy family portrait photography so much. No two sessions are ever exactly alike.
