One of the most important aspects of a Bar and Bat Mitzvah is the family coming together, therefore the photographer will be required to photograph many family portraits throughout the event. These photos may be shot in several locations – the bema, in and around the temple grounds or in the room where the party reception will be held. In some instances, there is a separate photo shoot at the temple on another day. This is especially true if the actual service is very early in the morning of if the temple doesn’t allow photography during the service. If photography IS allowed on during the mitzvah service, the photographer must be discreet and not use a flash. He or she will need a long telephoto lens that is great in low light. This way, the photographer can be a distance away from the bema and still capture the event well.
Pre-shoots are very popular for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Whether boy or girl, having the photographer spend and hour or two taking these special photos is a perfect way to may the child comfortable taking photos for their upcoming event. The photos taken at a pre-shoot often incorporate the mitzvah theme (ie: tennis or cities etc.) somehow and the photos are often displayed at the party itself. The photos are usually enlarged and positioned creatively throughout the party site. It is important that during the pre-shoot the photographer is able to connect with the child and shoot photos that truly capture the essence of the child’s unique personality.
It is best if your photographer is versatile in his or her style. Portrait shots are important because the family usually wants these for a variety of uses – whether for an album, enlargements or to share with other family members. Creativity and imagination are also important because most people like to see interesting and intriguing images and that capture attention. Once the party is in full swing, the photographer should be able to take great action shots. Often at a Bar or Bat Mitzvah party there are not only people dancing, but also there are games for the kids to participate in and enjoy. The photographer must be able to be a quick and accurate shooter to capture the best moments of all the action. Another important aspect for the photographer to focus on is the décor. Parents spend a lot money on décor to create a theme or distinct atmosphere for their child’s special day. It will mean a lot to them to have fabulous photos of all the creative décor they invested in for the day.
The bottom line is that mitzvah photos will be enjoyed for generations to come, so make sure you hire a photographer who capture the moments in a way that will make you feel like you’re reliving the day every time you view them! An album is a perfect way to create a keepsake from this milestone event. If not an album, then some nice wall prints should be a great reminder of the day for yea
